Rotary Blasthole drilling : AR application
The journey
Project Goal:
A solution mainly created with an idea to show art of possibility for clients in the mining equipment industry. Application which would be used as connected worker solution, supporting data coming from the IoT devices such as : number of targeted blast holes completed and depth coverage by the drill-bit.
Medium: Android phones supporting ARcore.
Customer & End User
Mining company stakeholders and visitors to the Perth, Australia Accenture.
Methodology
A non-linear method of design thinking was applied, keeping in mind the extreme time crunch and creating experience for a fairly unfamiliar domain. Understanding the agenda which was to mainly highlight the possibility of carrying operation progress remotely.
As in all AR and VR applications, a 3D environment creation which is a simulation of the real world, is of core importance. We gathered information on the type and texture of the terrain, the standard depth a drillbit would cover. How many blastholes can one expect to cover in one defined area.
As for the parameters, they were largely divided into operational and mechanical parameters. The former being above the ground and the latter below. The solution was supported on android (AR core).
Success metrics
Introducing remote maintenance, off-site monitoring. Doubles as the future of showcasing cutting-edge machine specs and its 3D rendition in action.
Individual contribution:
Requirement gathering, journey creation, storyboarding, experience direction inside the application, imagery, SFX and VFX referencing for the 3D models.

Journey map
The journey covers the experience from a walkthrough perspective. Mostly covering the possibilities in which an application pertaining to remote maintenance can be explored.

Storyboard
During this phase the animations, shot direction and interactions and possible diversions to better explore an application are decided. Although there can be changes in it at later stages as well.

UI design
UI creation for AR application usually needs to be environment neutral. To achieve that, I used black transparency on the HUD panels and then draw visuals in them. Below shared are just a few snippets of the visual creation.
